Prodanović, Jaša

Born Apr. 23, 1867, in čačak; died May 1, 1948, in Belgrade. Yugoslav political figure and historian.

Prodanović graduated from the faculty of natural sciences and mathematics of the Higher School in Belgrade in 1890. In 1901 he helped found the Serbian Independent Radical Party. From 1903 to 1920 he was a deputy in the Skupshtina (assembly). In 1921 he helped found the Republican Democratic Party. He opposed the government’s introduction of the antidemocratic decree of Obznana (1920) and repression of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia.

Between 1941 and 1944, during the fascist occupation of Yugoslavia, Prodanović was under arrest. After 1944 he joined the National Army of Liberation. From 1946 to 1948 he was minister of Serbian affairs and deputy chairman of the government of the Federal People’s Republic of Yugoslavia. Prodanović wrote a number of historical works, as well as articles on Serbian and Russian literature.
