A crude Phaseolus vulgaris (kidney bean)-derived alpha amylase, which is claimed to inhibit the breakdown of carbohydrates (starches) into glucose. Starch blockers have been marketed as a means of allowing excess food consumption without gaining weight; however, there are no peer-reviewed reports supporting claims that starch blockers are effective for weight control. According to Christine Gerbstadt, MD, RD, of the American Dietetic Association, starch blockers probably do allow complex carbohydrates to pass through the small intestine largely undigested; but when they get to the large intestine, the starches ferment, give off gas, and cause bloating and diarrhoea.
