, in Paris in the Julian and Lazar schools. A skilled technician, she won many honors through her long career. She painted a number of wealthy patrons and celebrities, among them Henry James, Clemenceau, and Cardinal Mercier. Well-known paintings include The Dancing Lesson (Art Inst., Chicago), Sita and Sarita (Corcoran Gall.), Portrait of Mrs. Dupont (Mus. of Fine Arts, Boston), and self-portrait (Uffizi).

Beaux, Cecilia

(1855–1942) painter; born in Philadelphia. She was influenced by the work of Thomas Eakins and became a portrait painter. After studying in Paris at the Académie Julien (1887), she set up a studio in New York City (1890). Her sensitive academic work, as in Dorothea and Francesca (1898), and Mother and Daughter (1898), remains popular.
