Socialist League

Socialist League

a British socialist organization active from 1884 to 1889. The Socialist League was founded by W. Morris, E. Marx, E. Aveling, and other socialists who had withdrawn from the Social Democratic Federation. During its first years, the Socialist League was active in the labor movement and promoted socialist ideas. E. Marx and Aveling tried to turn the league into the nucleus of a major socialist party. However, in 1889 anarchist tendencies became predominant in the league. E. Marx, Aveling, and Morris withdrew and the league virtually became an anarchist group and soon fell apart.
