Starikov, Nikolai Antonovich

Born Mar. 21 (Apr. 2), 1897, in the village of Edrovo in what is now Valdai Raion, Novgorod Oblast; died June 4, 1961, in Kiev. Soviet mining scientist. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1951); professor from 1939.

After graduating from the Leningrad Institute of Mines in 1924, Starikov worked in the mining industry and in educational and research organizations. He took part in the design and development of the Bakal, Mount Vysokaia, Mount Blagodat’, and Mount Lebiazh’ia open-pit mines. Starikov’s research dealt mainly with systems for opencast mining at great depths and with fire prevention in copper-pyrite mines.

Starikov was awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor and various medals.
