star motions

[′stär ‚mō·shənz] (astronomy) For the Milky Way, this includes rotation within the galaxy, motion which is described with respect to an external frame of reference; superposed on this systematic rotation are the individual motions of a star; each star moves in a somewhat elliptical orbit, with respect to the local standard of rest, the standard moving in a circular orbit around the galactic center.
