Ivanov, Viktor Evgen’evich

Born Nov. 9 (22), 1908, in the village of Staraia Maina, now in Ul’ianovsk Oblast. Soviet physicist; specialist in the physical chemistry of inorganic substances. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1964) and academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (1967). Member of the CPSU since 1929.

Ivanov graduated from the Ashkhabad Pedagogical Institute in 1942 and the Odessa Hydrometeorological Institute in 1945. In 1947 he began working at the Kharkov Physicotechnical Institute, becoming its director in 1965. Also a professor at the University of Kharkov (since 1962), he is one of the founders and directors of the physicotechnical department.

Ivanov worked out a method of producing high-purity metals by vacuum distillation and condensation on heated surfaces, which has found industrial application. With his students he devised original equipment for hot rolling and pressing of metals in a high vacuum. Ivanov’s studies of the properties of reactor materials are highly important, as is his work on compositions having special mechanical and physical properties. Ivanov has been awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and several medals.
