Viktor Grishin

Born Sept. 5(18). 1914. in Serpukhov. Soviet state and party figure. Member of the CPSU since 1939. Born into the family of a worker. Graduated from the Moscow Geodetic Technicum in 1932.

In 1932–33, Grishin worked as a survey engineer in the Serpukhov Raion Land Section of Moscow Oblast. In 1937 he graduated from the Moscow Technicum of Steam Locomotive Traction. He then took correspondence courses in the Higher Party School of the Central Committee of the CPSU. In 1937 he worked as assistant manager of the locomotive depot of the Serpukhov railroad station. In 1938 he was drafted into the Soviet Army, and when he returned in 1940 he again worked as assistant manager of the locomotive depot of the Serpukhov railroad station. Since April 1941 he has been secretary of the Party Committee of the Serpukhov station. From 1942 to 1950 he was secretary, second secretary, and then first secretary of the Serpukhov City Committee of the CPSU. From 1950 to 1952 he was head of the Machine-building Department of the Moscow Committee of the CPSU. and from 1952 to 1956 he was second secretary of the committee. Since March 1956 he has been president of the All-Union Central Council of Trade Unions. Since June 1967 he has been first secretary of the Moscow City Committee of the CPSU. At the Nineteenth, Twentieth, and Twenty-second through Twenty-fourth party congresses he was elected a member of the Central Committee of the CPSU. Since January 1961 he has been a candidate member of the Presidium of the Central Committee of the CPSU, since April 1966 a candidate member of the Politburo, and since April 1971 a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the CPSU. He was a deputy to the third through ninth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. Since 1967 he has been a member of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. From 1956 to 1967 he was vice-president of the World Federation of Trade Unions. He led Soviet delegations of trade unions at the fourth (1957). fifth (1961). and sixth (1965) world congresses of trade unions. He has visited many foreign countries as a leader and member of CPSU delegations to congresses of Communist and workers’ parties and as leader of delegations of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR and Soviet trade unions. He has been awarded two Orders of Lenin, the Order of the Badge of Honor, and medals.
