Beliaev, Viktor Mikhailovich

Born Jan. 25 (Feb. 6), 1888, in Nizhne-Ural’sk; died Feb. 16, 1968, in Moscow. Soviet musicologist. Doctor of art history (1944).

During the 1920’s, Beliaev was an active propagandist for Soviet music in the domestic and foreign press. From 1938 to 1960 (with some interruptions) he taught music theory and the history of music at the Leningrad and Moscow conservatories (beginning in 1943 he was a professor). In 1959, Beliaev became a senior research fellow at the Institute of the History of the Arts. Beliaev studied the music of the peoples of the USSR and music paleography. His works Byelorussian Folk Music (1941), Old Russian Musical Notation (1962), Essays on the History of Music of the Peoples of the USSR (issues 1–2, 1962–63), and others made an important contribution to Soviet musicology. Many of Beliaev’s articles have been published in foreign music journals. Beliaev was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and medals.
