Sevan Monastery
Sevan Monastery
an architectural complex built on an island in Lake Sevan. (The island is now a peninsula.) The monastery was founded in the fourth century. Preserved structures include two three-aisled cruciform domed churches of the ninth century. The clear silhouettes of the small Karapet Church and the large Arakelots Church (874) may be seen from a great distance. The carved wooden doors (1176 and 1552) and the carved capitals of the foyer (in ruins) of Arakelots Church are in the Armenian Historical Museum in Yerevan.
