Starokadomskii, Leonid Mikhailovich

 

Born Mar. 27 (Apr. 8), 1875, in Saratov; died Jan. 27,1962, in Moscow. Soviet arctic explorer. Doctor of Medicine (1909).

Starokadomskii graduated from the Military Medical Academy in St. Petersburg in 1899. In the years 1910–15, he served as senior physician on a hydrographic expedition to the Arctic Ocean on the icebreakers Taimyr and Vaigach. From 1932 to 1934 he took part in the Northeastern Polar Expedition, organized by the People’s Commissariat for Water Transport. An island he discovered in 1913 in the southeastern part of the Severnaia Zemlia archipelago bears his name.
