Starosel’skii, Vladimir Aleksandrovich

Born Nov. 3 (15), 1860, in Chernigov; died Aug. 26, 1916, in Paris. Participant in the Russian revolutionary movement. Member of the RSDLP from 1907; Bolshevik.

The son of a judge, Starosel’skii graduated from the Moscow Agricultural Academy in 1885 and then worked as an agronomist in Black Sea Okrug. In 1888 he went to Georgia, where he participated in an agricultural program to eliminate phylloxeras.

In July 1905, Starosel’skii was appointed acting governor of Kutaisi Province. He used his position in the government to aid the revolutionary movement and was nicknamed the Red Governor. Banished from Transcaucasia in January 1906, he carried on party work in the Northern Caucasus, becoming secretary of the Kuban’ regional committee of the RSDLP and then chairman of the Northern Caucasus Union Committee of the RSDLP. He was a delegate to the Fourth Conference of the RSDLP (Third All-Russian) in 1907. In 1908 he emigrated to France, where he took part in the work of the Paris section of Bolsheviks.

Starosel’skii was the author of works on viticulture and on the history of the revolutionary movement in Georgia.
