Rybinsk Reservoira reservoir formed by the dams of the Rybinsk hydroengineering complex on the Volga and Sheksna rivers, located in Yaroslavl, Vologda, and Kalinin oblasts. Rybinsk Reservoir began to fill in 1941, and the projected water level was reached in 1947. It has an area of 4,580 sq km and a volume of 25.4 cu km and is 110 km long along the Volga River, 226 km long along the Mologa River, and 328 km long along the Sheksna River. Its greatest width is 60 km, and the average depth is 5.6 m. The reservoir consists of a broad central reach and three reaches that grow progressively more narrow upstream—the Volga, Mologa, and Sheksna. The level of the reservoir varies within a range of 4–5 m. The reservoir regulates the seasonal flow of water. Rybinsk Reservoir was built to provide energy and to facilitate water transport; it is part of the Volga-Baltic Waterway. There is fishing in the reservoir. The cities of Cherepovets, Ves’-egonsk, Uglich, Poshekhon’e-Volodarsk, and Rybinsk are located on the reservoir, and part of the Darwin Preserve extends out over its surface. |
