Rykalin, Nikolai Nikolaevich

 

Born Sept. 14 (27), 1903, in Odessa. Soviet metallurgist and specialist in welding. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1968; corresponding member, 1953).

After graduating from the Far East University in 1929, Ryka-lin continued to work at the university. From 1936 to 1939 he worked at the N. E. Bauman Moscow Higher Technical School, and from 1939 to 1953 in the section concerned with the scientific development of electric welding and electrothermics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Since 1953 he has been head of a laboratory at the A. A. Baikov Institute of Metallurgy.

Rykalin’s main work has been devoted to the thermophysical basis for the treatment of metals, the welding of metals, and plasma processes in metallurgy and processing of inorganic materials.

Rykalin is a vice-president of the International Institute of Welding and chairman of the National Committee of the USSR on Welding. He was elected a member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts in 1959. He has been awarded four orders, as well as medals.
