arthroscopic wand

arthroscopic wand

An electrosurgical device consisting of a radiofrequency (RF) generator linked to a bipolar electrode. The electrode is inserted into a body part, such as a joint, and then bathed in an electrically conductive fluid. When RF energy stimulates the active electrode, it generates voltage gradients between it and the return electrode that are able to cut away or disintegrate tissue. Arthroscopic wands are used in joint surgery to shave damaged menisci or cartilage, for example.
