Ryszard Berwinski
Berwiński, Ryszard
Born Feb. 28, 1819, in Polwice na Poznańszczynie; died Nov. 19, 1879, in Constantinople. Polish poet. Participated in the revolutionary movement in Poland in the 1840’s.
Berwiński’s satirical narrative poem Don Juan From Poznań (1844) was directed against obscurantism and the church. His best verses are pervaded by a militant revolutionary-democratic spirit (the cycle of poems “The Book of Life and Death” from the collection Poetry, 1844). His interest in folklore and the history of Slavdom is reflected in Great Polish Stories (1840).
