Severodonetsk
a city (since 1958) under oblast jurisdiction in Voroshilovgrad Oblast, Ukrainian SSR (Donbas). Located on the Kupiansk-Voroshilovgrad highway in the Sever-skii Donets River valley, 6 km from the Lisichansk railroad station on the Kupiansk-Kamyshevakha line. Population, 112,000in 1975; 5,000in 1939; 33,000in 1959; 90,000in 1970.
Located in Severodonetsk are the Lenin Komsomol Severodonetsk Chemical Combine, prefabricated-housing and woodworking combines, and the Voroshilovgradkhimstroi Combine (a chemical-engineering complex). The city has instrument-making and chemical-metallurgical plants, a plant for the production of glass and plastics, and food-industry enterprises. Construction materials are also manufactured in the city. Institutions located in Severodonetsk include the Ail-Union Scientific Research Institute of Safety Engineering for the Chemical Industry, a control computer scientific research institute, a branch of a chemical machine-building scientific research institute, and a branch of a state nitrogen industry institute. Severodonetsk also has a chemistry and mechanics technicum and a music school.
