Redjang-Lampong

a group of peoples that occupy the southeastern extremity of Sumatra, in Indonesia. Numbering approximately 1 million (1972, estimate), the group includes the Lebong, the Semendo, the Serawai, the Paminggir, and the Kroe (approximately 800,000) and the Lampong, including the Abung and the Pubian (approximately 200,000). The Redjang-Lampong speak languages of the Malayo-Polynesian family that are similar to Malay. They are Sunni Muslims, although some of the Lampong retain ancient beliefs. The chief occupation of the Redjang-Lampong is agriculture, including the cultivation of rice, coconut palms, tobacco, and pepper.
