su·pe·ri·or sa·li·va·tor·y nu·cle·us [TA] a group of preganglionic parasympathetic motor neurons situated rostral and lateral to the inferior salivatory nucleus; it governs secretion of the lacrimal, sublingual, and submaxillary glands by way of the facial nerve and the sphenopalatine and submandibular ganglia. Synonym(s): nucleus salivatorius superior [TA], superior salivary nucleussuperior salivatory nucleusA nucleus of the visceral motor column in the pontine hindbrain just rostral to the medulla. This nucleus is the origin of those preganglionic parasympathetic axons of the intermediate nerve (a component of the facial nerve (CN VII)) that synapse in the pterygopalatine ganglion to regulate secretions of the lacrimal and mucosal glands of the nose and mouth and the submandibular ganglion to regulate secretions of the sublingual and submandibular salivary glands.
