Régence style

An important transitional style between the main Louis XIV and XV periods. Cultural life returned from Versailles to Paris and this lighter atmosphere was reflected in more curvaceous furniture, the cabriole leg, and the removal of stretchers. Forms included new commodes and the bergère armchair. Ornamentation followed the lozenge shape, foliate scrolling, espagnolettes, and ormolu mounts. Slipcovers were an innovation for those not able to afford separate seasonal suites of furniture.
