On the southern border of KS, southwest of Dodge City; organized as Godfrey County Mar 26, 1873 from Indian lands; name changed to Seward Jun 3, 1861; changed to Howard 1867. In 1873 the name Seward was given to a new county in the present location. Name Origin: For William Henry Seward (1801-72), U.S. secretary of state (1861-69), renowned for negotiating the purchase of Alaska (1867)
