S100A5

S100A5

A gene on chromosome 1q21 that encodes a member of the S100 family of proteins, which have 2 EF-hand calcium-binding motifs. S100 proteins are localised in the cytoplasm and/or nucleus of a wide range of cells; they are involved in regulating cell cycle progression and differentiation and other intracellular activities. The S100A5-encoded protein has a 20- to 100-fold higher affinity for Ca2+ than the other S100 proteins under identical conditions; it also strongly binds Zn2+ and Cu2+, which impairs the binding of Ca2+.
