VetlugaenUKVetlugaa city; center of Vetluga Raion, Gorky Oblast, RSFSR. It has a port on the right bank of the Vetluga River and is 47 km north of the Uren’ railroad station on the Gorky-Kotel’nich line. Population, 10,000(1969). Vetluga’s industry includes a logging and timber distribution establishment, the felling, processing, and floating of lumber, and a distillery. It has a technicum for lumber specialists, a medical school, and a museum of local lore. The city arose in 1778. Vetlugaa river in Kirov, Kostroma, and Gorky oblasts, RSFSR, and Mari ASSR; left tributary of the Volga. Length, 889 km; basin area, 39,400 sq km. The valley is asymmetrical; the left slope is low-lying, and the right is composed of marls and sandstones and is elevated (in some places up to 100 m). Along the last section of the lower course of the river, both banks are low and submerged in high water. The current is slow. The floodplain of the river is covered with lakes and dried riverbeds. The most important tributaries are the Neia, Bolshaia Kaksha, Usta, and Iuronga on the left and the Vokhma and Liunda on the right. It is fed mainly by snow and freezes in early November and opens up in April. It is used for floating timber. The Vetluga is navigable to the mouth of the Bokhma River (over 700 km from the mouth).
