Tynemouth

(tīn`məth, tĭn`–), city (1991 pop. 60,022), North Tyneside metropolitan district, NE England, on the Tyne River. Tynemouth is highly industrialized. Formerly a shipbuilding center and a coal and fishing port, its manufactures now include furniture, textiles, glassware, machine tools, and die castings. It is also a resort. There are remains of a priory founded by King Edwin of Northumbria early in the 7th cent.
