Saalburg

a Roman fort on the Limes Germanicus north of Homburg. It was excavated between 1868 and 1929. A well-preserved Roman encampment was found, with defensive walls, administrative buildings, and outbuildings, which were restored between 1897 and 1907. Outside the encampment was a Roman settlement with a commander’s quarters, baths, sanctuaries, and dwellings. The encampment was established during the reign of Domitian (c. A.D. 83). During the reign of Hadrian it was surrounded by a wooden stockade and during the reign of Caracalla (c. 210) by a stone wall. Many weapons, metal objects, and domestic articles have been found.
