Vasilii Petrovich Diachenko

D’iachenko, Vasilii Petrovich

Born July 28 (Aug. 10), 1902, in Kustanai; died Mar. 23, 1971, in Moscow. A Soviet economist, corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1953). Became a member of the CPSU in 1922.

D’iachenko graduated from the economics department of the Leningrad Polytechnical Institute in 1929 and worked as a scholar and instructor in the institutions of the Ministry of Finances of the USSR until 1947. Associated with the Academy of Sciences of the USSR beginning in 1947, he was deputy director of the Economics Institute from 1947 to 1953 and its director from 1953 to 1956. In 1961, D’iachenko became vice-president of the International Institute of State Finances and in 1962 chief of a department in the Economics Institute and chairman of the Scientific Council on Price Formation of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. D’iachenko did research on the political economy of socialism. He was among the first to develop scholarly disciplines on Soviet finance and to give courses in this area. He was awarded three orders and also medals.
