Vasilii Petrovich Izhevskii

Born June 4 (16), 1863, in Riazan’; died Oct. 23, 1926, in Kiev. Soviet metallurgist.

In 1887, Izhevskii graduated from the physicomathematical faculty at Moscow University. From 1899 he taught at the Kiev Polytechnic Institute, becoming a professor there in 1905. His principal works were devoted to blast-furnace production, metallography, electrometallurgy, and heat treatment. Izhevskii developed a number of reagents for etching microsections that are still used in metallography today. He proposed several original designs for electric furnaces.
