Vasilii Remeslo

Born Jan. 28 (Feb. 10), 1907, in the village of Teplovo, present-day Teplovka, Piriatin Raion, Poltava Oblast. Soviet plant breeder. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1974) and the V. I. Lenin All-Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences (1964). Hero of Socialist Labor (1966). Became a member of the CPSU in 1942.

In 1928, Remeslo graduated from the K. A. Timiriazev Maslovskii Institute of Selection and Seed-raising (Kiev Oblast). From 1933 to 1937 he was a senior research worker at the Novourenskaia Experimental Selection Station (now the Ul’ianovskaia Experimental Selection Station). Between 1938 and 1942 and again in 1947 and 1948, Remeslo worked at the Severskii Donetsk State Selection Station; he was the station’s director in 1941 and 1942. From 1948 to 1964 he was assistant director of the Mironovka Research Institute of Wheat Selection and Seed Production (until 1968, the Mironovka Selection Station). He became the institute’s director in 1964.

Remeslo elaborated methods of selection that led to the development of valuable varieties of wheat. He obtained numerous winter-wheat varieties, including Mironovka 808 and Mironovka Iubileinaia, which are widely distributed in the USSR and abroad.

Remeslo was a delegate to the Twenty-second and Twenty-third Congresses of the CPSU and to the Twenty-second, Twenty-third, and Twenty-fourth Congresses of the Communist Party of the Ukrainian SSR. He has been a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Ukrainian SSR since 1966. A deputy to the sixth, seventh, and eighth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR, Remeslo has been a deputy chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR since 1972. He has been awarded the Lenin Prize (1963), the Order of Lenin, the Order of the October Revolution, three other orders, and various medals.
