Vasilii Skalon

Skalon, Vasilii Iur’evich

 

Born Feb. 7(19), 1846; died Apr. 19 (May 2), 1907. Russian zemstvo (local self-government) official and publicist.

Between 1871 and 1883, Skalon was a member and then chairman of the Moscow District Zemstvo Board. From 1880 to 1882 he published and edited the newspaper Zemstvo and contributed to the newspapers Russkie vedomosti and Russkaia letopis’ and to the journal Gramotei (The Scholar). Skalon edited the transactions of the Free Economic Society from 1886 to 1888. He also wrote articles and books on zemstvo affairs and public education. [23–1462–]
