On the northeastern border of TX, east of Lufkin; original county; organized Mar 17, 1836 (prior to statehood) from Old Mexican Municipality. Name Origin: For the Sabine River, which forms its eastern border. French form of Spanish sabinas 'red cedar trees' that grow along the banks.
