Iunusov, Sabir Iunusovich

Born Mar. 5 (18), 1909, in Tashkent. Soviet organic chemist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1958). Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Uzbek SSR (1952). Member of the CPSU since 1950. Hero of Socialist Labor (1969).

In 1935, Iunusov graduated from the Middle Asian University in Tashkent, and from 1935 to 1941 he was on the staff of the All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Pharmaceutical Chemistry. From 1943 to 1956 he was associated with the Institute of Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the Uzbek SSR, and from 1950 to 1952 he served as the institute’s director. Iunusov has also performed research at the Institute of the Chemistry of Vegetable Matter of the Academy of Sciences of the Uzbek SSR; in 1956 he was appointed director of the institute. From 1952 to 1962 he was the vice-president of the Academy of Science’s of the Uzbek SSR.

Iunusov’s principal works have been devoted to the chemistry of alkaloids. He established the nature of the accumulation of alkaloids in the flora of Middle Asia during different growing seasons. He has isolated a large number of alkaloids and determined the structure of many of them.

Iunusov has been awarded the Order of Lenin, three other orders, and various medals.
