Inland, numerous stands of virgin California redwood, many over 2,000 years old, are found. The world's tallest known tree, the redwood Hyperion (379.1 ft/115.5 m), is located in the park. With the neighboring Jedediah Smith Redwoods, Del Norte Coast Redwoods, and Prairie Creek Redwoods state parks, the park is a unit of the Redwoods National and State Parks, which protect nearly 39,000 acres (15,800 hectares) of old-growth redwood forest.
