(sŏd′ē), Frederick 1877-1956. British chemist who was a pioneer in the study of radioactivity. With Ernest Rutherford, he explained the atomic disintegration of radioactive elements. Soddy also coined the word isotope to describe elements that were chemically identical but had different atomic weights.
