type Ib supernova type Ib supernova[¦tīp ‚wən′bē ¦sü·pər¦nō·və] (astronomy) A member of a subclass of the type I supernovae that lack a strong line feature at 615.0 nanometers due to ionized silicon; are approximately a factor of 4 fainter than type Ia and have light curves that are a little broader and slower to decline; have, in addition to iron emission, broad lines of oxygen and calcium in their late-time spectra; and are believed to be explosions of massive stars that are devoid of hydrogen. |
