Time-Pulse Transmitter

a device that converts a measured (monitored) quantity into a pulse having a duration (time interval) proportional to the actuation time of an input signal. Time-pulse transmitters convert mechanical displacement or angular rotation into the duration of an electrical pulse. They measure the transfer time of a “tagged” portion of a medium to a specified distance when registering the flow of gases and liquids, and they measure the transmission time of acoustic signals in a medium from the radiator to a monitored point and back when determining distances, dimensions, and liquid levels. An advantage of a time-pulse signal is its high interference immunity when transmitted over communication lines and the ease of converting it to a digital form. It is employed chiefly in telemechanic systems and in the digital apparatus of a centralized control.
