tape operating system[′tāp ′äp·ə‚rād·iŋ ‚sis·təm] (computer science) A computer operating system in which source programs and sometimes incoming data are stored on magnetic tape, rather than in the computer memory. TOS was a predecessor to IBM'sDisk Operating System.
TOS died out really early as disks such as the 2311 and 2314became common with the IBM 360 whereas thet had been a realluxury on the IBM 7090.
