tape speed

tape speed

[′tāp ‚spēd] (engineering acoustics) The speed at which magnetic tape moves past the recording head in a tape recorder; standard speeds are ¹⁵⁄₁₆, ¹⁄₇₈, 3¾, 7½, 15, and 30 inches per second (2.38125, 4.7625, 9.525, 19.05, 38.1, and 76.2 centimeters per second); faster speeds give improved high-frequency response under given conditions.
