Volnukhin, Sergei

Born Nov. 8 (20), 1859, in Moscow; died Apr. 11, 1921, in Gelendzhik. Russian sculptor.

Volnukhin studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture (1873-86) with S.I. Ivanov. He became an academician of the St. Petersburg Academy of Art in 1910. He was close to \\hzperedvizhniki (the “wanderers,” a progressive art movement). He did portraits of P. M. Tret’iakov (bronze, 1899) and A. M. Korin (plaster, 1902; both in the Tret’iakov Gallery) and produced the monument in Moscow to the printing pioneer Ivan Fedorov (bronze, unveiled in 1909). In 1918, Volnukhin was one of the sculptors creating ideological education through monuments and memorials. From 1895 to 1918 he taught at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture. His students included N. A. Andreev, A. S. Golubkina, and S. T. Konenkov.
