Vologdin, Aleksandr Grigorevich

Vologdin, Aleksandr Grigor’evich

Born Feb. 28 (Mar. 11), 1896, in the village of Rozhdestvenskoe, presentday Perm Oblast. Soviet geologist and paleontologist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR since 1939.

After graduating from the Leningrad Mining Institute in 1925, Vologdin worked in the Geological Committee and in institutions that evolved out of the committee. Since 1943 he has been at the Institute of Paleontology of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. His principal works are on the regional geology of the Asian part of the USSR, paleontology (Archaeocyatha and ancient algae), stratigraphy, hydrogeology, and engineering geology and useful minerals. He received the C. Walcott International Paleontology Prize in 1947. Vologdin has been awarded the order of the Red Banner of Labor and a medal.
