Volok

(English, portage), the Old Russian term for the place at which two navigable rivers are closest to each other and where ships and freight can be portaged on dry land by the shortest route from one river to the other. Paths of communication along portages aided the development of Russian cities, such as Volokolamsk and Vyshnii Volochek.
