[′ref·rəns ‚väl·yəm] (acoustics) The audio volume level that gives a reading of 0 VU (volume units) on a standard volume indicator; the sensitivity of the volume indicator is adjusted so reference volume or 0 is read when the instrument is connected across a 600-ohm resistance to which is delivered a power of 1 milliwatt at 1000 hertz.
