The industrial center of a coal-mining region, it has iron and steel smelters, glassworks, and power plants. Pernik is linked by rail with Sofia and Greece. It was known as Dimitrovo from 1949 to 1962.Pernika city in Bulgaria, located in an intermontane basin on the Struma River, southwest of Sofia; capital of Pernik District. Population, 84,000 (1974). Pernik is a major rail junction and a leading center of heavy industry with close production ties with Sofia. Industries include the mining of brown coal and the generating of electric power, which is produced at the Republika and Pernik Thermoelectric Power Plants.
