A gene on chromosome 7q34 that encodes a calcium-permeable channel, which participates in neurotransmission, muscle contraction and exocytosis by providing calcium as an intracellular second messenger; transcellular calcium transport may be regulated by vitamin D, parathyroid hormone or calcitonin. The TRPV6 channel is activated by a low internal calcium levels, and involved in Ca2+ absorption and reabsorption in the kidney and intestine.
