Sadovskii, Andrei Dmitrievich

Born 1880, in Simferopol’; died July 8, 1927, in Moscow. Participant in the revolutionary movement in Russia. Member of the Communist Party from 1901.

Sadovskii began his studies at the St. Petersburg Institute of Railroad Engineers in 1899 and graduated in 1911. He was a member of a student revolutionary organization. In 1905 he participated in the formation of druzhiny (armed workers’ detachments) at the Putilov Factory. From 1906 to 1911 he represented the student Social Democratic group of his institute in the Unified Student Organization of the RSDLP. In 1914 he was drafted into the army and engaged in propaganda among the soldiers. After the February Revolution of 1917, he became a member of the presidium of the Petrograd soviet and of its executive committee, deputy chairman of the soldiers’ section of the soviet, and chairman of the military department. In June 1917 he became a member of the bureau of the Bolshevik group in the soviet. During the days of the October Revolution of 1917, he was a member of the Petrograd Military Revolutionary Committee and was in charge of armaments, communications, and transport.

Beginning in 1918, Sadovskii worked as director of the motor-vehicle section of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee and then of the transport section of the Central Executive Committee of the USSR. He was the organizer and director of the transport workers’ union and, beginning in October 1919, chairman of the central committee of that union. He was a delegate to the Ninth through Eleventh Congresses of the RCP(B) and a member of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee and the Central Executive Committee of the USSR.
