Viktor Prokopevich Solonenko

Solonenko, Viktor Prokop’evich

Born Nov. 2 (Nov. 15), 1916, in Irkutsk. Soviet geologist and geophysicist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1966).

Upon his graduation from the University of Irkutsk in 1940, Solonenko became an instructor at the university, receiving a professorship there in 1953. In 1958 he became director of the seismology laboratory of the Institute of the Earth’s Crust of the Siberian Division of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. His principal works are devoted to mineral resources of Eastern Siberia and the Far East (graphites), engineering geology under permafrost conditions, and seismogeology. Solonenko substantiated the organic nature of the carbon in graphite found in the most ancient strata of the earth. He has also identified a new graphite region in Siberia and has participated in the discovery of several mineral deposits.

Solonenko has been awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor and several medals.
