[′stā·shə‚ner·ē ′fāz] (analytical chemistry) In chromatography, the nonmobile phase contained in the chromatographic bed. (mathematics) A method used to find approximations to the integral of a rapidly oscillating function, based on the principle that this integral depends chiefly on that part of the range of integration near points at which the derivative of the trigonometric function involved vanishes. (microbiology) The period following termination of exponential growth in a bacterial culture when the number of viable microorganisms remains relatively constant for a time.

1. the period in the course of growth of a bacterial culture during which the multiplication of the organisms becomes gradually less and the bacteria undergoing division are in equilibrium with those dying; 2. referring to the usually solid, nonmobile component in partition chromatography.

stationary phase

a period in the growth of a culture of BACTERIA where the number of CELLS dividing is equal to the number dying. The growth of the bacterial population therefore ceases and the GROWTH CURVE levels off.
