Safed Koh

(säfād` kō), mountain range on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, SE of Kabul; rises to 15,620 ft (4,761 m) at Mt. Sikaram. It parallels the Kabul River. A spur of the range is crossed by the Khyber Pass. The lower slopes are nearly barren; pine and deodar formerly grew on the main range, but devastation during the Afghan civil war reduced timber resources. The valleys support some agriculture.

It extends from east to west and widely separates the valleys of the Murgab and Hari Rud rivers. The Safed Koh is composed mainly of limestones and is dissected by numerous ravines. The mountainous semidesert terrain of its slopes features sparse juniper stands and pistachio trees.
