Tarbagatai
an urban-type settlement in Petrovsk-Zabaikal’-skii Raion, Chita Oblast, RSFSR. Tarbagatai is situated on the right bank of the Khilok River, a tributary of the Selenga, and has a railroad station on the Ulan-Ude-Chita line. The settlement produces machinery for the wood-products industry.

a mountain range in the Southern Altai. The Tarbagatai Range is about 75 km long and rises to a maximum elevation of 2,736 m. It is composed of schists. Taiga covers the northern slopes; the southern slopes are covered with shrubs and steppes of tufted grasses.
Tarbagatai
a mountain range in eastern Kazakhstan, on the border with China, between the lakes Alakol’ and Zaisan. The range is about 300 km long and has a maximum elevation of 2,992 m, at Tastau.
The range is composed of schists, limestones, sandstones, and granites. The northern slope is steeper than the southern, and the crest is flat and bald. Karst is developed in the limestones. The slopes are dissected by ravines. The lower sections of the slopes are occupied by semideserts and steppes. There is woody vegetation in the river valleys; shrubs grow on the southern slopes, in the steppes.
