A popular term for chronic anxiety, variously attributed to a serotonin imbalance. Persistent anxiety is more common in certain families and may have a hereditary component.Clinical findings
Worry, irritability, insomnia, disturbed sleep, loss of concentration, tachycardia, tremor, hot flashes, nausea, diarrhoea, upset stomach, shortness of breath, headaches, myalgia.
Management
Serotonin-specific reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)—e.g., fluoxetine (Prozac), citalopram (Celexa); azapirones (5-HT1A receptor agonists)—e.g., buspirone (Buspar).
