Refregier, Anton
Born Mar. 7 (20), 1905, in Moscow. American painter and graphic artist.
Refregier, who has resided in the USA since 1920, attended the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence from 1920 to 1925. His art expresses civic enthusiasm, angry condemnation of the ugliness of capitalist society, and the struggle for peace. Examples of his work are the murals in the Rincon Hill post office in San Francisco (1946–47), the paintings Heir of the Future (1943) and Friends (1966), and the drawing Man With A Bird (charcoal, 1950’s). The last three works are in the A. S. Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow. Refregier is a member of the World Peace Council (1955). He has visited the USSR many times.
